    Mirumgum: We already do turn matter into pure energy... in fission reactors and nuclear bombs. The matter is converted into energy according to the famous equation E=MC^2, where E is energy, M is mass and C is the speed of light. Our nuclear reactions are very inefficient - less than 2% of the matter composing the fuel is converted - but the process is much more efficient in the natural fusion reactors we call stars. Incidentally, exactly the opposite process took place millions of years after the Big Bang: the pure energy created by the Bang 'condensed' into all the matter in the universe.
