    @CrazyCreator I do know that rockets don't have enough fuel to do that at all times. But there is actually one additional burn the the space shuttle (or any spacecraft wishing to reenter without orbital decay) must make to reenter - a retrograde burn to deorbit the shuttle, allowing for reentry. There must be a change in velocity for it to deorbit, anyways.

    Actually tothemyers the rocket engines don't have enough fuel to do so and can only be used for reentry but yes they do stop firing once in space.
