    gas discharge lasers such as CO2 lasers use a long narrow plasma tube as both the lamp and the crystal. this tube has to be charged with lots of RF energy.

    solid state lasers have a cavity which contains a lamp and a crystal. the lamp "pumps" the crystal with photons.

    actually a laser does not cause a chain reaction making more photons.

    Basically, a laser uses photons to start a chain reaction that creates more photons of the same wavelength, and makes sure that all these photons are "fired" in bursts and collimated.
