The Korlonians were the natural enemy of another species, both needed to use tactics, and use their environment to their advantage, so both species evolved to try and understand as much as possible to gain an advantage over their enemies. When they won the war, they kept on going, and this became their primary goal (Survival and tactics became less important)

I just copied the wording, I had the idea of the Korlonian's goal being understanding everything for a very long time. It isn't an uncommon sci-fi goal anyway.
