    The thinnest reaches of the atmosphere go very high. The ISS is about 370 kilometers above the surface and it still experiences atmosphereic interference.

    the atmosphere is only about 15 to 30 miles thick the earth is about 4000 miles

    pixel, you should have the asteroid move slower, the atmosphere bigger, and have the flames start INSIDE the atmosphere, since asteroids/meteors don't burn up until they hit atmosphere. Also, you could possibly make it so that is shows the destruction slowly covering the planet so its a bit more "realistic"
