The Longinus is a 22 m l/12 electromagnetic mass driver, firing projectiles at 90 km/s. Projectiles utilize basic shield technology avoid atmosphereic friction. Only one of these cannons survived the Imperium's fall, and is now an icon of their military.

True. Still, having a ten foot long rail hitting your ship would be pretty scary. I mean, you're having a perfectly nice day in space, when suddenly, SLAM! A long iron rail just barely misses your head. Granted, you wouldn't have mush time to be scared, as almost immediately afterward you're suck into space.

I thought railguns were supposed to shoot long iron projectiles at speeds of like Mach 10 or something like that. Think of having an iron rail slam into your ship at that speed. It almost makes it redundant to use a nuke.
