They venture onto land and collect nuggets of copper, which they use to make tools. I use an active volcano's lava stream to melt the metal and make more obisian spears. I also start making nets and ropes from fiberous seaweed and begin mass cultivation of fish trapped inside huge partitions of nets. I then make a large seaweed farm that grows the special seaweed and normal varieties. I also experiment with using toxins from pufferfish (or the kerbal equivelant) to coat my land army's spears.

My kerbs find that they can breathe in air as long as they eat this special seaweed once every week.

I keep expanding on the mountains west of me, and maybe the mountains south of me, but no land in between.

My kerbs produce spores when they die or get excited (they don't die when they are excited and do this), which each grow into new kerbs. I hold a giant party to get them all excited and my population triples.
