Wait, I just remembered that the Shattered Plains are first broken during the last Desolation, so the shouldn't exist yet. You kill the chasmfiend, and while cutting it up you find an enormous gemstone inside.

When the colonists get there, they find a mass of chasms and cannot pass. They are then assulted by a huge lobster-like thing, which is called a chasmfiend. It kills 4 people before they can escape.
