    You learn that they used to raid travelers, but there was a war and they left the area where the war was at.

    That's actually a smoke plume from the volcano. The spot is visible on the map, and it's near some mountains.

    There is a way you could get to it... You could kill Thomas's colony, take his tech, ride horses all the way there, get the loot, ride back, and fortify your country for when he invades you.
