There are 16 Shards, which are pieces of Adonalsium, who was basically a really powerful entity that Shattered (caps makes it look more important) for an unknown reason, although it had an enemy that made a weapon. Anyway, after Adonalisum Shattered 16 humans from Yolen (where Adonalsium Shattered) picked up the Shards and went out to different planets in the Cosmere, bringing with them humans and stuff. Brandon Sanderson's books take place on these planets, like Roshar.

They do, but flying boulders and debris picked up by Highstorms can do a lot of damage.
