I expand as much as I can towards my southern colony by the lake.

I develope a carroballista that is more chariot like (there's a platform to stand on) with some small armor bits to either side of the ballista. The ballista CAN also be drawn back by moving the cart foward. I'ma just call them chariot ballistae.
