The gold liner does not need to be there for the reaction to take place. It is mainly there for looks. -

I don't know about looking like a spork (nice spork, though XD). Seems that anything that limits the contact between the rubidium and the distilled water to a few pixels will do it. I used a rubidium box with various liners to test. -
