One of the lagest man made, non nuclear explosions, happened on Dec.6th 1917 in Halifax. Killing 2000 people, and destroyed large areas of the habour and the city. A detailed description can be found on the TPT-Forum

An bad idea indeed, but it was wartime and all british ships on high seas where in danger to be attacked by german u-boats. It was maybe better to risk one ship, fully loaded with explosives than divide the cargo and risk these ships too.

An excellent recreation of such a horrific disaster, i don't know who thought it would be a good idea to load so much high explosive cargo onto one boat.
