    A more throrugh explanation: Tidal forces physically rip a body apart. It happens because the force of gravity (FG) gets weaker the farther from the center of the gravity well (CoG) you go. If r is the distance to CoG, then FG decreases by 1/r^2 times. Because of this formula, the closer the body is to CoG, the faster FG drops off. So if the body is too close to CoG, then FG is much stronger on one side than it is on the other and the body is pulled apart.
