*kilometers per hour intensifies
ok the sr-71 could not be defeated still and the only reasons that the sr71 was cancelled was the us didnt wanna cause another ww and it costed way too much to keep producing
@Umm also U-2 crisis wasn't something that anyone wanted to repeat, so SR-71 didn't fly over Russian territory as impudently and wasn't fired at in turn. Only actual attempts to take it down were done by Vietnamese - with use of far less advaned weapons
@Umm it can reach around 30 km fully loaded, and relatively brief encounter is all that it needs as an interceptor, it doesn't need to follow it for hours or something. MiG-25 and 31 also have missiles flying at speeds like Mach 5, there were even anti-orbital systems tested if i remember it right
Laminat09, interesting, after reading into it, the only way it was able to reach such an altitude was due to it zoom climbing, and likely with minimal weight (minimal amount of fuel, no ammo nor missiles), however shortly after reaching that altitude it would have fallen down like a rock, because there is no way a air breathing jet could sustain such a altitude, and with a standard load it couldn't match the SR-71.

Laminat09, the Soviets shot down an U2, that was one of the reasons for the development of the SR 71, I don't think one more jet would have done that much for the already tense relations. Also can you provide a source for your claim of a MiG-25 going at a staggering 37650 meters?
@Umm it forced the SR-71 out of soviet airspace several times. Shooting it down would be too much of an international scandal for the time. MiG-25 also set the flight altitude record for air-breathing planes for flying to the height of 37650 meters
