    Theoreticly changing the character "O" to a colored ball, basicly a filed "O" then that should be possible, Afterall the comedore 64 and the comadore pet relied on tweaked and creativly used text characters and sprites to make game "grafics" work and look good, their was a sprite limit of 8 or something like that so they were used sparingly.
