Just if any1 cares, Eta Carinae has mass of 110 suns, diam of 1.21 AU, density of 0.000071 g/cm^3, surface temp of 5790K and lumirosity of 4487 times that of the sun. However, VY Canis Majoris has only mass of 20 suns, diam of 18.1 AU, density of 0.0000000038 g/cm^3, surface temp of 2750K and lumirosity 417243 times that of the sun, according to Universe sandbox. The lumirosity number seems a bit too random for me but nvm, it could be right -

luke4061 2nd Oct 2012Im not too sure that VY Canis Majoris is the biggest. But i defintely think Eta Carinae is. On my program, Universe Sandbox, it does have VY Canis Majoris on it, although Eta Carinae has 110 times the mass of the sun.

VY Canis Majoris has a much greater volume than R136a1, therefore it is much larger. R136a1 is the brightest star known though. -
