Maybe you should add a brick dam for the houses, (Meltable, maybe two pixels wide) And you should make the chamber at the bottom above the lote a little wider to make it look like the pools at the bottom of a volcano.

it's no secret really, I select a color I like, I then use the lighten and darken tools on a small brush, afterwards I use the smudge tool to blend it, finishing with the darken tool for texture and depth.
