Recently, as some of you may have noticed, there has been a change to the Element Suggestions forum. Now, normal users may not post replies to suggestions made in that forum. I definitely see the reason for this, but I don't imagine this is the way to fix it(I'll get to that later).
The main reason I'm opposed to this isn't that now I can't post needless +1s, but rather that myself and other users can no longer expand upon the ideas of users, fleshing them out and making them into more of a final product. The more I look at it, the more I feel we are losing by not being able to do this.
Now, I understand there is a lot of needless crap in between the sweet fruits, but this is not the solution. Sure it removes the crap, but it also removes the more fruitful posts. If anything, the solution should be to have rules regarding useless posts in , users having to apply to be able to post in these forums and meet certain requirements such as: -Having atleast 25 posts. -Posting mostly useful and fruitful posts, such that they can be assumed intelligent and mature(not going to suggest fighter stickmen and troll/flame). -Having been part of the community for atleast 30(or more/less) days. -Having atleast 5 saves that demonstrate basic technical knowledge of the game, to reduce suggestions of useless elements. All users would apply either in a forum or through a system. They would be reviewed by admins/moderators and would have to be approved to be able to reply and/or make threads in certain forums(Element Suggestions, Development, Lua Scripting, etc.) which would not benefit from nooby advice, input, and ideas.
Whatever happens, this is my opinion, and I hope to see some support on this.
The decision to restrict posts was only just today, it may change to allow more people later.
The main reason was because people who have nothing to do with development were shooing off people with ideas and giving the wrong impression about how we take ideas.
imo, none of the suggestions that ended up being elements became so due to long fleshed out conversations. I'm still at a bit of a loss at how Mercury ended up in the game, besides for the need of an element to display arbitrary temperatures the way DEUT could not.
Mercury got into the game because a lot of people wanted it implemented and I decided to make it in a mod to demonstrate how it could be useful. I asked Simon if he would take a look at it and he found it interesting enough to implement it into TPT. He wanted a liquid that would be heavier than most powders and do the things that Mercury does. It has a lot of uses, people have proven that when it got implemented. Also, I think it got implemented because there was a large thread dedicated to Mercury. (Although there was a lot of flaming in there.) The fact is, unless you can prove that it will be a useful element/tool for TPT, it shouldn't be suggested. There should be a submission form with a list of things that have to be put into it to be turned in and considered. This would eliminate a lot of the people who suggest things that should be in mods instead of the official version. Then, if the moderators accept the submission, they can post it on an opinion thread to see how the public feels about the element/tool. The public would have to be "respectable" members of TPT to post on the opinion thread that way there is no spamming, flaming, ect. This would be a good way to get the valid suggestions in and keep the invalid suggestions out and make everyone happy. Not only that, TPT would get better for it.
The main reason why I implemented mercury was not because of the expansion, but because I thought we needed a very heavy liquid.
As for the thread in hand, even with the criteria you posted, we'd still have the same issue, or the moderators would just be buried in work trying to review other members.
I agree it is a loss to be unable to discuss suggestions with other users, but when I decided to lock down the forum, the amount of useful discussions was overshadowed by useless comments.
@Simon(View Post) Even though that's sad, maybe some restrictions controlled by counts would be useful. @Cr15py(View Post) All users would apply either in a forum or through a system. They would be reviewed by admins/moderators and would have to be approved to be able to reply and/or make threads in certain forums(Element Suggestions, Development, Lua Scripting, etc.) which would not benefit from nooby advice, input, and ideas. That would make moderators get overwhelmed in a second. Maybe skip the review part.
... I thought mercury was implemented because it's a liquid that conducts electricity w/o the delay and blocking and stuff from water.
On Topic: I think that's a good idea to have reputable non-moderator players be able to post. There aren't that many moderators, and feedback on elements doesn't require moderators it just requires people who know the game well.
