    You should add a customizable GOL element.

    You could store the begin pattern in individual bits of tmp and the stay pattern in individual bits of tmp2.

    People have made obscenely complicated machines out of GOL in the past.

    ..It's also ancient. GOL predates pretty much everyone on these forums and then some. More than 40 years easily.
