    Depends on which theory you believe, the publicly accepted one is the big-bang but physicists who believe string theory tend to agree with the 4-dimensional-brane-collision-in-a-5-dimensional-quantum-vacuum. Also, some people prefer to use the multiple-universes-in-a-negative-vacuum theory.
