E=MC2 does not prevent you going forwards again, in fact E=MC2 has nothing to do with time travel, E=MC2 calculates the amount of energy in matter E=energy M=mass, C=Speed of Light. So unless you intend to use an antimatter-powered time machine, you do not need to consider E=MC2.
To answer the question, I would go back to a time were inflation was low and consolidate all my money into gold. Then I would go back to present day and sell all the gold and I'd be rich.
hmm... I would go back to the really early days, and teach humans about sanitation, agriculture, husbandry, maths, science (particularly the scientific method, not just believing whatever Mr. Stotle said), and ethics. then i would try to create a small economy and a structured society (democratic) and teach a group of people who can teach others on what i know about the world and technology, and make sure that they understand that I do not know every thing and that even things I know may be false. I would promote not necessarily equality, but honesty and doing the right thing by others.
As for religion, I don't know if i would reintroduce it... It does seem to be a good way to tie ethics, morals, history and stories into a central point for the community and it provides an explanation of the universe by introducing a deity and saying he did it all. However the explanations of the universe bit is starting to fall to pieces with science now proving heaps of it wrong...
agghh! so much pressure as to how to remake human society...
