I suppose we should just take the innocent until proven guilty approach to this as one of the flaws of the English language is the fact that it can be misunderstood.

Macquarry, I don't care if you're gay or not. It makes no difference to my view of you. I'm actually proud of you for admitting. I'm not gay, but I welcome you here with open arms (metaphorically!)
