im not sure if this is theoretical or if it is being put into practice today but the theory is that when an object comes into the orbit of another larger one you can use gravity to speed up the smaller object. the photon resembles the small object.

    That theory has been proved years ago, thats how they get to to planets without useing all their rocket fuel.
