    actually, it's kiBIbyte you're talking about, which is 1024 bytes. a kilobyte is 1000 bytes. a gigabyte is 1 000 000 000 bytes (something I like to call business-gigabyte) while a giBIbyte is 1 073 741 824 bytes (that being 1024^3). this is why you buy a 320GB HDD and you get 298GB (actually GiB, not GB, since it's giBIbyte) worth of space.
