Airhaven is the only survivor because its hawser was cut, leaving it floating aimlessly, supported soley by air traders.

flying cities far larger than airhaven actually did exist at one point in the traction era, a few hundred years before the books are set (long after the events of the fever crumb prequels) however they didn't float free. they were anchored to the ground on collossal hawsers which fed them fuel, power, and lifting gas. but they were all destroyed over time as their ground anchors were either eaten by cities, or they were struck by ligtning and burned to the ground.
