And I don't think I could implement that idea anyway... how would it make visible thrust?

Solar sails work because of solar wind, right? Solar wind includes high-speed particles AND photons. When the high-speed particles hit the sail, they bounce off and push it a little.

@jklujm lasers do carry kinetic energy, lasers are just beams of photons and photons have energy which is why solar sails work, and like the ship with a fan on it analogy the photons transfer energy twice, once when they hit the sail, and twice when the bounce off so my suggestion would actually work

@magnetman33 yes they do cancel out but then there is the air in the sail already that has to go somewhere and it cant go through the sail so it goes towards the back of the ship which creates a net force and propels the ship forward

@bananas401k it is impossible to blow a sail attached to the same object as the thing blowing it, as the forces cancel out.

I don't think lasers carry any kinetic energy.

can you make a self propelled solar sail now??? (a craft that has lasers that propel itself, like blowing air at a sail on a ship to make it move)

NOTE: The RCI light stands for "running cycle indicator." If you turn off the engine, do not turn it back on until the RCI light turns off.
