  they are a part of the heat shield and not used to actually go into the ship. the ship wedges itself at high speed into the targets hull after melting it. then the marines come out of the docking port at the front and enter the hull breach.

  The hooks aren't really shaped right for a ship like this. You should be using spikes without anything to keep it in, because once the ship is jammed into the hull, you might want to get it out again and reuse the ship.
