    Win9x runs on top of DOS like 1-3 but it hides the DOS prompt and automattically loads windows

    Um ackshualy linux is not an OS!! it's GNU/Linux Wihchi s basically GNU + Linux and like it's a kernal and not an OS. you're thinking of dssitrocbutions which are totally different!!!

    Linux *is* an operating system, but I wouldn't call Windows 9x an operating system.

    I agree. Linux is a lot less resource-intensive and great for older machines. I'm actually writing this on a 14-year-old laptop running Ubuntu MATE 15.10. Truly amazing.
