Something I found while experimenting with the console.

Coal has a default life value of 110. When coal is set alight its life value counts down from 99 to 0 where it turns into a pixel of fire. Wood and most other elements have a default life value of 0 meaning that when you do !set type xxxx coal they immediatly turn to fire.
