This is the cross section of a nuclear bomb. The chemical explosives (ring around the glowey bit) gets detonated resulting in extreme pressure compressing the nuclear fuel (glowey bit) to its critical density which causes a nuclear explosion.

nope simply spark it. the detonation takes a bit but as they said it's supposed to kinda be miliseconds to seconds so while it might take around 10 seconds here it'd take a fraction of a second for a real one
