The metl is some kind of a good material for the explanation. When the pressure hits an object, the things that are moved are "pixelated". Maybe because fixing this will make the performance worse?

Pressure and gravity are simulated in 'blocks' of 4x4 pixels, probably for performance reasons as you suggest. If this wasn't the case, the game would need to make 16 times as many calculations each frame.
