    If you don't want the engines on, you may block them up with titanium or so.

    Sandboxvoid, you can turn them off if you destroy the portals for the engines. They can be on if the ship is just infact going to space and burning up from the intense speed. Then, they can circularize at the apoapsis. I think it is apoapsis anyways.
