    By not having the barracks at the top, no gas lighter than general components of air would drift up and asphyxiate the units

    No real reason for that, I could make something up though. By having Barracks in the upper levels of the facility, the units stationed would be protected by gas attacks that would naturally descend down the elevator shaft.

    very good! but why put the barracks in the forward section and not in the subsurface area, where it's more heavily shielded?
