  This actually works IRL. There's a thing called a 'Casaba Howitzer' which was designed for missile defence during the Cold War. Basically it channels a nuclear explosion into a narrow, focused beam (basically a one-shot, self-destructing plasma cannon). They've been tested, a long time ago, and they work.
