I just basically read the wiki page on singularities.
It works because in the intended design, singularity would eat matter until its life ran out, and then explode. The more matter it ate, the bigger it exploded. These bombs trick the game into thinking that the singularity into thinking it ate A LOT of matter with the tmp value, and then make it explode by lowering its life to 0. The bomb is made from snow so that it is heat triggered instead of instantly going off. Finally, the max tmp you can set it to is 2147483647.
