The Centurion was the first actual MBT, and the M26 Pershing was classified as a heavy/medium tank. And the Americans didn't directly need a heavy tank, because nothing the Germans had at that point in the war could be made enough of to rival the Allied overwhelming amounts of everything, from air support to logisticial capabilities.

T-44 and Centurion Mk.I can also be considered as MBTs but Pershing was first MBT used in combat.

US had Jumbo Shermans which could be frontally penetrated only by Panther and Tiger II. M26 Pershing was probably the first MBT, it had armor of heavy tank and mobility of medium tank.

No matter how good Sherman was, Americans badly needed a heavy tank, as a result of which they had to rename M26 Pershing from medium to heavy to create the appearance of having heavy tanks.

Fun fact, Tigers weren't common on the battlefield, they were rare, same deal with Panthers and Tiger 2s were exceedingly rare, this is why the 75 Sherman was the superior tank, there were more of it, their gun was better suited for shooting at the targets they mostly faced (enemy infantry and fortifications). The Tiger however was hard to maintain, hard to fuel and hard to move, sure it was hard to penetrate but who cares if you aren't facing it.

So basically, until the introduction of 76mm Shermans and the like, the Tiger 1 was a frontally impenetrable tank that could kill you from 2km away. And of course it had a very similar silhouette to Panzer IVs and IIIs at a glance, so a bit of Tiger panic and infamy isn't too surprising.

Far as I can tell, the reason why the Tiger 1 was so feared on the western front was because when it was first encountered most Allied tanks available in france were 75mm Shermans, which had no chance of penetrating frontally. There were a handful of British Fireflies around and they could do the job, but the 17pdr had accuracy issues and the Firefly had its own slew of problems.

I didn't mean to say that Sherman and T-34 HE rounds are capable to destroy tank. Heavy IS-2 tank was in no way inferior to Tiger 1, long reload was compensated by high penetration of AP round.
