This is assuming that the civilisation is around a type 2.5 civilisation on the kardashev scale, as for type 3 or above civilisation large ships would be as cheap as matches, and small fighters obsolete.
Mostly they are bad at long distances fights but are easy to conceal, meaning unless cloaking exists they are the best type of ships for attacks on planetary settlements, which will usually have large and powerful weapons like fusion cannons or lasers, which are either accurate or have large blast radiuses
@Deuteactormadness Smaller ships can actually be better in combat than capital ships, because they are cheap to produce ,easy to fit with weapons, can get far closer to large ships than larger ships, don't use much energy, and are able to function in gravity and atmospheres. The problems only start with moving large distances and actual energy production, which is why carriers are used for transportation and charging of the fighters.
for example hundred of kilometer apart? @Laminat09
Important to remeber that projectile can be counted as moving in a straight line only in close range. At big distances orbital mechanics start affecting it severely
you also need to count in maximum acceleration that your crew can sustain if you don't have gravity and anti-gravity generating technology
