Yes, you can use other adders for specialized use, and the raw outputs aren't something random. for example, if the raw output is half 5 and half 10, it actually means 7.5. So you can directly use last MPU's output as next MPU's input.

How is it optional? Without it, you just get a random sum of elements (i.e. almost certainly quite far from the correct answer)

Ah I see - if I'm understanding correctly, you're doing Monte Carlo multiplication, so only O(n) multiplications per frame.
Ngl this is pure magic - I'm still not sure how the n^2 multiplications are being done.
Is the 16x16 version complete? It seems to be missing the final heat summer
