Sultana was a wooden, side-paddled steamboat built by the John Litherbury Boatyard for cotton trade on the Mississippi River. On April 27th, 1865 it suffered a boiler explosion while being overloaded with passengers,around 1000 more than intended.DECO ON

I would also like to point out the POWs were from the union army being released from the confederates, and yes that means they were betrayed by their own commanders and the goverment they faught for.

By the way the "one more voyage" thing still happens to this day, as well as "one more flight", which in my opinon is the real tragety of most tranport accidents. The statment "how could anyone see it coiming" is uassally answerable with "the people who were fired or told to screw off by managment"

The sultana was inspected and it was noted that the boiler needed to be replaced as it had way to many patches and cracks, but the inspeector was convinced to allow one more voyage, the union officers were bribed to allow him to take extra passengers so he could make more money, which is also why he was so set to fix it later(after the rush was over). And most of the POWs(prisoner of war) drowned.

May not be 100% accurate to the original ship. I depended entirely off of models of the steamer and painting depictions, as I could not find blueprints. I tried to make as close as possible.
