Yes, the entire team of engineers warned the (Thiokol, not NASA) admin of the issue the night before. It was a known issue but it wasn't seen as urgent until they learned of the extra-cold-temp launch. The admin disregarded them beacause they didn't think the data showed a correlation between o-ring failures and temperature. They told NASA it was fine to launch.

Thier was an engineer that forwarned it would happen because of the cold morning opening the gap the seal was supposed to seal (tollarences of stuff that go throuh extreme temp changes is a b!tch to get right) so the already stiff seal burned up and failed, he was ingnored of course because "they had a scedual to keep, and everything would be fine"

Gel actually does work pretty well due to not being able to melt + increase in viscosity at higher temps
