@t3h1337n00b(View Post) Yes. Most particles decrease air velocity slightly. A 4x4 block of METL will decrease the air velocity by 81% each frame. SPNG, RIME, PSTS or WIRE will set the air velocity to zero on each frame (even with just a single particle).
But this isn't quite as effective as walls in blocking air flow, because walls do some extra stuff to stop air passing.
There's an array bmap_blockair in the air sim stuff which determines whether air can flow in each cell (cell==4x4 block). Normally it's calculated by checking which type of wall is in each cell. I suppose the number of solid particles in each cell could be counted and if it's at least 16 set it to block air.
What if the solid was 4x4 but not aligned on the wall grid as in a column of 4x4 blocks ofset by one pixel, which is possible for solids but not walls. Or a 3x3 block.
I'm a big supporter of the idea of toggling options. I think a lot of the rejected ideas would work if they made it so you could toggle whether it is on or off.
