Commenting/Voting

Woah buddy. Lets not get angry here.

I don't think its truly for that reason. Sometimes, even the name of a save is enough for someone to instantly judge it as downvote worthy. And most of the people who play this game actually do have the mental capacity to use the comment box, but usually if you ever put '-1' anywhere in the comment, you are liable to get a downvote on all of your saves.

Also, most people who 'lack the brain function to use the comment box' lack the brain function to also make a tpt account, therefore, they can't up/down vote.

that can be ture, I mean if I saw a brilliant save that had ingenuity and daring of biblical proportions, I would still downvote if the title was a mix of expletives or an offensive remark. There are a number of saves that I have avoided voting up but not necessarily downvoted that involve the word spaztic ( alternate spelllings apply) and I wouldn't really say that is impulsive behaviour. I agree about revenge downvoting. I prefer to leave a comment with a suggestion for improvement instead of downvoting but in the one instance I criticised someone's comment I immediately had -1 on all of my current scores. There is no way to change the culture of malpractice surrounding downvoting so it must go, and I am confident that at least one of the alternatives suggested would make a suitable replacement.

That being said it is easy to jump on the bandwagon of saying that all downvoters are petulant children not far mentally evolved past our primate ancestors, and there is a case to be made for the preservation of the status quo- so my idea is that we put this matter to the polls once LockheedMartin has sorted out the teething problems. That way we can find out how much support there is not just for abolition (although I'm sure that would pass) but to help decide on the best system to replace downvotes after it is gone- which has been the main point of debate on this thread.

    Well said man.....

TPT is bound to be a better place to be if haters and revenge-haters are sweeped out. Or just take away the means of hating, that is, downvoting.
After all, the downvoting feature on the forums was taken out and thus no one has "negative" reputation.
But then there should be a restructuring of the FP system. A save that is unworthy of FP, but just gets on it due to lucky votes, is usually hated 'till it's knocked out. With no downvotes, the save will remain on the FP for quite some time before it's knocked out due to absence of upvotes.
So it's probably best to change it so that a save needs to get X amount of upvotes every Y hours to stay on FP.
Also, as @Schicko (View Post) pointed out, the activity in TPT servers is different at different times. So a save published during low traffic is likely to be noticed lesser than a save published when the activity is high.
So an upvote counting system that dynamically alters the number of upvotes needed for a save to be promoted to FP and for the number of upvotes needed for a save to stay on FP across various hours might come in handy.

Also, how about a comment length limit and a continuos comment limit to prevent spamming?

continuous comment limit can be placed, however there is a chance that someone lags, causing a bug.
there is already a length limit, 500 letters. do you want to decrease it?

that would be terrible, the limit really should have been 1000 or 1500. I had a ton of comments cut off at 500 chars for no reason when the limit was added, and I had to add a feature to my mod to tell me when I went over 500 chars so I would know when to split the message into two. Sometimes (rarely) you just have to make a really detailed comment to either explain the save or something to do with moderation.

I'm still not sure why he did 500, I think both me and jacksonmj recommended 1000 ...

I agree, especially with WIP saves, if someone asks for a fix or a suggestion it is hard to keep it within the limit.

I had a number of saves hit with spam comments (People would just go "trolololololololololololololololol.......") previously. If the limit was shorter then a lot of spam would not be possible. Everyone does not report saves when this happens.

In my opinion, A shorter comment limit is just like removing downvotes. Sometimes, downvotes are necessary for some saves, but removing them altogether is likely to make this community a better place. Similarly, keeping a comment limit means some detailed comments cannot be made, but it prevents loads of spam.

I we take the opportunity to create more reforms to the system if we got rid of downvotes, we could improve the reporting system, as the big difference between spamming downvotes and comments is that comments can be traced backto a user and that user dealt with accordingly. It is the fact that some cannot be trusted to behave where there would be no consequences for themselves should they not due to the anonymity of downvotes. There is more impotus to use the comments box properly if there are appropriate punitive measures to deal with miscrreants. I would support looking in to the reports system to make it easier to report a comment and give a reason why.
