Have you ever wanted everybody see your art? Or maybe you wanted to draw art for a game-development studio? Now you have a chance!

The Powder Toy is seeking for great artists to draw pictures for our Desura page!

We want to promote TPT in Desura (like Steam, but for indie-games) to have more users, but we need some pictures representing how cool TPT gameplay is.

    We need:

    1. Boxshot - 480x600 recommended, front-on shot, not 3D please. It should represent game features and coolness, also it must contain a big line "The Powder Toy" on it (remember, it's a game's box face). You can stylize it to fit the image or make it the part of the scene. For example, lop-sided letters made of metal will look cool if they are near an exploding reactor.
    2. Preview Image - 1024x768 recommended. It's a game screenshot, displaying the game process. You can take a look at these here: http://www.desura.com/games
    3. Profile header image - 950x150 recommended. It will be used on the top of this page to promote the game - make sure it shows how interesting and fascinating TPT is. Also, you don't need to print game name on it.
    4. LARGE profile header image - 940x370 minimum. The same as profile header image, but bigger.

Okay, now about some simple rules:

    • No penis and other vulgar drawings
    • No swearing
    • No logos and signs like "Made by MrCoolDrawer"
    • You must use .png format - jpg will look crappy

You may participate in one, several or all nominations, that isn't restricted. Also you can retry as many times as you want, just make sure you notify us in this topic.

Contest will end on 14th of August, but we may change that date if we won't have much contestants.

Judges are: Simon, devast8a, Triclops200, frankbro and savask.

The prize is, that your art will be used on our Desura profile page, so everybody will see it! Notice that different people can win in different nominations, for example we can use boxshot of a one person, and profile header image from another person. Also, we will give you credit when announcing The Powder Toy Desura page.

And now some advices to make your art better:

    • Show as many gameplay features, as you can. Add reactors, stickmen, lasers, etc.. But don't make the picture bloated.
    • Have a story behind your picture. For example, you can show how stickmen are building a complex machine.
    • Add some explosions.
    • Don't use decoration layer a lot - we need to show TPT features.
    • Use the p key in TPT to make a screenshot of the simulation window.

    Good luck!

How is one to make artwork without decor layer? If the idea of the page is to extend our accessibility to others on the web, why not have it use decor? If they [The people looking at this profile wondering if they should play or not] see a magnificent picture with decor versus a non-decor picture, who is to say whoever sees it will even understand the difference of the two? And then it comes down to a point of which picture looks better, and I could guess the decor picture will look better. I'm not telling you to change your rules at all but it is just something to think about. Usually whenever advertising something, it is always best to advertise all of your features being used in the greatest extent, whether or not most people are capable of it in the first place. You have to advertise on the basis of intrigueing the viewer so they think: "Hey cool I love to make artwork and building! Maybe when I play I can improve both for the fun of it!"

To be honest, I don't find deco layer one of "your features being used in the greatest extent", but anyways, that's not the reason why you shouldn't use deco layer a lot (Notice that rules allow you to use some deco).

The idea of boxshots and profile pictures is to show game main features, such as electronics, air sim, reactions and so on. If the deco wasn't limited, people would probably draw ponies and other colorful stuff which doesn't show anything related to TPT at all.

Only one of the images should use decor then. All the other things I can agree with you on, as this is not a MS paint application and it should not be advertised as such. The only picture that could arguably use decor is whichever on is first seen by whoever's wanders upping the game link or however that website works. And if you were worry about ponies, you are, after all, a judge and therefore you could easily add a simple disclaimer prohibiting the use of extraneous artwork, then continue with a short list of do's and don't's. Your thoughts are valid, but I don't think people will actually submit artwork at the random for this.

And if you want to skip this competition B.S. you should directly contact BuysDB for help. Otherwise, you aren't going to receive much assistance from anyone on here besides maybe? Jenn4. At that point the competition has turned into a last minute clustermug in which you will be desperate for even the worst of artwork. :D

Well, as you have probably noticed, "don't use a lot of deco" is just a recommendation. Judges including me will determine whenever there are too much deco or not, so there is not much to worry about, just we want to see "natural" saves. To my mind, some cool explosions and electronics are more impressive than deco layer textures :-P

And as about competitors, I think you shouldn't be really an artist to make a boxshot or profile image. Imagination + cool creations will make the work :-)

I lack artistic skills so I am going to sit this one out. But hopefully you and your TPT staff get some good pictures.

A few personal questions, short of Googling the website, but what is the other website like? You said it was like steam. Are there a lot of kids or what? I want to know in case one day I come on here and we have 50 new users playing around causing shenanigans and whatnot. :P

Desura is like Steam but for indie and open-source games. Here is the link: http://www.desura.com/

I don't know how many kids are there, but indie-auditory is usually pretty cool :-)

I think it's too empty and probably hard to understand for a not-player. Also it has wrong size (watch what sizes we need), but other than that, it looks cool :-)
