Why is PSTN so hard to use?

As the title says, I've had a lot of trouble using the PSTN element. When I have some PSTN and spark it, sometimes it only sparks one row of the piston, and sometimes it extends in the complete wrong direction. From my experience, there seems to be no consistency with how pistons work. Is there a way to make them more consistent and more easily usable?

    Have you tried the wiki?

It's always a good idea to isolate a problem when you see it; in piston's case this would mean drawing smaller pistons until you eventually get to single strips. It sounds like you're having problems because you're drawing blobs of pistons instead of said single strips. Had you tried to isolate it, you would have realised that that's how pistons are designed to work.

I suggest the Complete Electronics Tutorial.

electronics work best with 1-pixel-thick lines and 1-pixel spaces in certain areas. Hold Z and click to zoom on an area, this will help with certain electronics stuff

Everyone is saying that you should start out with tiny 1-pixel pistons, because if you put a blob of PSTN, and a blob of PSCN that will be a mess.
