 What kind of "mods" are you trying to install?

Is it a lua script that you are planning to download from the script server or is it a proper c++ mod (like Cracker1000's or Ultimata mod)?

Steps to install latter are very simple, just download and run. In case you want to install a lua script tho, you may want to downlaod and install lua script manager by typing this into the console tpt.getscript(1,"autorun.lua",1).
