A nuclear explosion is made from nuclear fission by having an unstable radio-isotope bombarded by neutrons which causes the nucleus to split. The split leaves a spews out a few extra neutrons which will repeat the process. This causes the explosion. A critical mass is needed for the process to sustain itself. A star is a giant mass. A 1st generation star consist entirely of Hydrogen. In the center of the star, the gravitational force of the star upon itself causes the nuclei to fuse.
