Godzilla is a fictional giant monster - a daikaij - that initially appeared in Japanese sci-fi and horror films. It was first seen in 1954 in the film Gojira, produced by Toho Film Company Ltd. It is known for its dinosaur-like appearance, covered with peculiar plates on the back, capable of firing a form of fire or atomic ray through the mouth and also by be almost indestructible. To date, Toho has produced 32 films about Godzilla, the most recent being Shin Godzilla of 2016, and animated films such as the anime Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. In almost all the films he was played by an actor in costume (suitmation), but in the more recent ones he started to be portrayed by CGI. Four of his Japanese films received American versions that were significantly modified from the originals, containing unpublished scenes recorded by the Americans in addition to other alterations. In 1998, TriStar Pictures produced an American version located in New York City, with the redesigned monster, but this version did not please Toho herself, who later nicknamed her Zilla. In 2014, in a co-production of Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, won a new American version, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures all over the world except in Japan, where it was distributed by Toho herself. This version proved to be a success and guaranteed two sequences: Godzilla: King of the Monsters for 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong for 2021. Over the years, Godzilla has also inspired many other tokusatsus who are successful in Japan and worldwide.
