Generally, the vicious cycle has been accepted as intentional. I don't have much more than a showcase computer built for familie's (not by choice) so I am unable to play and games post-2006 well. Age of Empires rules, btw.
So... I completely agree, however, Nvidia and said huge corporations successfully do this. In other words, their games still sell. I've noticed WAY TO OFTEN that games don't even allow you the option to run the game in resolutions less than 1280X1024, which ultimately serves to support your reason for skepticism. I don't want to sound too conspiring, but hey, valid points! -

Yes, their games still sell because people go out and buy the powerful computers like I did myself and I have noticed that you can't run games in that sorta resolution. Age of Empire FTW! -
