here are some interesting concepts you can put in your mod:
when somethings living (plant, stickman, fighter) dies, fungi sprout from remains
give plant a finite amount of life, requiring it to be watered regularly, change soil when the plant depletes it of its minerals, plant will slowly grow towards sunlight (photons) instead of catching fire to the photons, when plant gets too much sunlight (photons) plant turns to dead plant
wood also finite amount of life, when wood dies it becomes dead wood (the wood currently in the game)
remember these are just concepts, so use them, don't use them, I don't really care

What about to add "ash" its will be product of burning wood or another living thing and compressed by a heavy powder, then it the ash is compresed it will turn into crude oil ready for be extract and refined. My idea is that for example living things like eukariotes or prokariotes or fish, dies and acumulates at the bottom and if you put sand or something that its heavy it turns into crude, or wood compresed under powder into coal. I posted it but i want to talk personaly with you. Sorry for my English
